Handcrafting timeless pieces

From the street, it appears as a modest, opaque box, clad in vertical strips of cedar (a “non-facade,” as Aidlin describes it). The front door is set as far away from the road as possible, so visitors travel along a path that runs nearly the full length of the building. This extended entry sequence was inspired by Chinese temples, where a progression of garden walls helps the mind transition from the bustle of the world.

"The materials of the home were chosen to quietly contrast with the lighter palette of the desert landscape," the studio said. Within, the dichotomy created by the thick-rammed earth walls and dark wood surfaces with the lightness of the fully glazed east wall heighten the view to the oak glade beyond.

"The structure would be exceedingly quiet and crisp in its geometry, intentionally contrasting the organic forms of the desert, and very low to the ground to minimize its presence," said the studio.

"The design intent was to create a glass house that captured and framed these two opposite conditions that flanked the house east to west," says Aidlin. In the hillside neighborhood of Castro Heights in San Francisco, a nondescript, midcentury terrace home has been transformed by Aidlin Darling Design into a three-story, multi-generational oasis crowned with a wild roof garden. "The existing home was dwarfed by its neighboring houses," says architect Joshua Aidlin, cofounder of Aidlin Darling Design. "The final massing of the home thoughtfully fills in what had been the ‘missing tooth’ among the existing row of homes on the street."

In the main space, heavy rammed-earth walls, which range up to 2 feet in thickness, highlight the sedimentary layers of the soil that was used to form them. “We thought about the precedent of a cabinet of curiosities,” says Kent Chiang, principal and project architect at San Francisco–based Aidlin Darling Design. The firm reinterpreted 17th-century vitrines housing taxidermy and astrolabes into a 120-foot-long, S-shaped, compartmentalized, interactive display of the latest Google devices. The clients were also interested in incorporating sustainable architectural strategies where it made sense. The brise soleil controls light and heat gain, deep overhangs offer passive solar control, and cross-ventilation is enabled by the narrow footprint and operable windows and doors.
On the occasion of his retirement in 1995, he gave a talk about his vision for a contemplative space that could provide some moments of quiet respite.
